Many business owners aren&#8217;t aware of the financial &amp; environmental benefits of recycling their metal scrap. In this article we offer a brief introduction to the various grades and common types of steel, one of the many materials CRI processes.\u00a0\u00a0<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There are over 3,500 different grades of steel according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldsteel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">World Steel Association<\/a>.\u00a0 Each grade has its own individual chemical and unique physical qualities.\u00a0 By appearance alone, it can be tough to differentiate numerous types of steel.\u00a0 Grading systems are used to distinguish steels based on their specific properties.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Common Grades of Recyclable Steel<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The four basic grades are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Mild Steel<\/strong> &#8211; used in pipe and steel framing 0.05% to 0.3% carbon<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Medium Carbon Steel<\/strong> &#8211; forging and vehicle parts 0.3% to 0.6 % carbon<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>High-Carbon Steel<\/strong> &#8211; springs and wire 0.6% to 1% carbon<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Tool Steel<\/strong> &#8211; cutting and drilling tools 1% &#8211; 2% carbon<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The surface of steel must be protected, galvanized, or painted as it can easily rust.
